Abstract
This research forms part of an ongoing investigation and re-instatement of the historic
appearance of The Gaskell’s House for the period of Elizabeth Gaskell’s occupancy.
The research was based around the cross-sectional analysis of paint samples, supported by
extensive archival research. In addition, onsite investigations revealed fragments of historic
wallpapers and complex decorative treatments, which through further analysis and
investigation were tied in with the relevant period.
Analysis of the samples was undertaken by optical microscopy using a variety of different
lighting techniques to reveal the chemical make up within the build up of individual paint
layers.
