The Leveson Inquiry, and the scandals that gave rise to it, raises an old question - what is the appropriate relationship between journalists and the police? This remains, also, an old question in the study of Charles Dickens and many scholars have felt it to be problematic. What do Dickens's difficult relations with the police have to tell us about our contemporary crisis?I
