Abstract

As an exploration of Irish republican former detainees’ experiences of ‘truth sharing’, the chapter analyses the meanings and significance of detainees' own understanding of ‘masculinity’ in comparison to dominant depictions of gender in armed conflict. It argues that there is pressing need to understand the role of masculinities in processes of narrating state violence, particularly when this violence is in relation to detention and imprisonment.
