Abstract

Almost all jewellery tells a story in its own way. It can tell a story about the wearer or bearer, about that person’s family or background, about wealth, about personality. But there is usually some sort of underlying story, often untold, about its own creation, about the influences on the artist who generated the idea, developed it, and finally made it what it is.

There has always been a story, a set of influences, behind what I create but it is only recently that I have found the narrative becoming more important and a more intrinsic part of the end result. The incorporation of some “readymades” which have sometimes played their own previous parts in my story has perhaps been, to a degree, the result of a period of self-examination and review taking place at a point in my life when, Janus-like, I look forwards and backwards at the same time; a time when the jeweller as narrator and metaphorist is increasingly interesting and important to me.
