Abstract

Business Inspiration was a short, action centred leadership and innovation development programme designed for owners and managers of smaller firms to address business survival and repositioning needs arising from the economic downturn. The article explores:
1. How was Business Inspiration designed and delivered?
2. What was the impact of the programme on participants’ learning experiences?
3. Are there transferable lessons to small firm development more generally?
The article contributes new insights to the debate and literature on owner/manager development in the small firm context. It proposes that there is a continuing need and demand for such learning but the requirements for public sector investment and for specific approaches and skillsets in designing, marketing and delivering such programmes are discussed.
