Abstract
"This book sets out to deal with the issues of language and communication which Tullett began to develop through his freelance work (Canongate/Scottish Poetry Library). It seeks to create a reading experience in two languages where both those narratives have equal weight, both visually and literally. It begins the ongoing research interests of The Caseroom Press - specifically; the format of the book; the exploration of the space of the page; composition; narrative; the physical act of turning the page; the interaction with the book and the notion of the book as an art object. The placing of a piece of work in the format of the book is akin to the visual experience of watching film or listening to music. The physical act of turning pages creates a sequence of events that unfold through time. As part of its unique design solution, The Season Sweetens also has to reflect its Footballing origins - it is a book of two halves, containing 46 football haiku in English and German with. This dual narrative involved an investigation of the text in order to devise a verbal and visual design solution that allowed the texts to be compared and contrasted. As publisher/designer, Tullett was responsible for the design of the book; its experimental format, typographic styling and the selection of photographers / photographs. Images are by the internationally renowned Julian Germain (For Every Minute You Are Angry You Lose Sixty Seconds of Happiness - Steidl Verlag, In Soccer Wonderland - Booth-Clibborn Editions. etc.), Gyles Lingwood, Julian Barker and Bernard Mataigne. Tullett commissioned Cockburn and they initiated the project. A companion volume of cycling poems (“Dancing on Pedals”) is planned as part of The Caseroom Press' ongoing research activities. The Season Sweetens has been reviewed as part of an article in the Times
