Abstract
NHS workforce data is used to estimate the cost to the NHS of employing psychiatrists at £1 billion. The value of this to people experiencing mental illness is questioned within the context of the lack of evidence for biological causes of mental illness and moves towards psycho-social understandings of mental health.
