Abstract
This paper discusses theatrical cages as a central modernist motif and particularly with reference to three British plays: London Hammer and Sickle Group's 'Meerut', Stephen Spender's 'Trial of a Judge' and Ewan MacColl's 'The Other Animals'. The aim is to present these cages as multi-layered motifs of meaning, marking a distinct connection with experiments on the Continent.
