Abstract
In an analysis of the riots, looting and damage that took place between 6-10 August 2011, Reicher & Stott (2011)
stated these events were not simply mindless criminality or the irrational mentality of mob. Rather, they highlighted four key concepts to understanding the events: people’s
grievances, lack of opportunity, empowerment and shared identity. While this analysis is impressive, this
present paper wants to highlight a concept in need of much more psychological enquiry, and which can be related to these and other events.
