Abstract

1 of 2 Illustrations selected for ‘Images 35 Best of British Illustration 2011’. The illustrations were selected by an internationally respected jury including Sheri Gee – Art Director, The Folio Society & Martin Harrison – Senior Designer, The Times. The illustrations were selected for the Editorial category.

Happy Radio was an illustrated work originally commissioned by ‘The Independent’ newspaper. The piece accompanied an article which explored some of the reasons why people enjoy listening to radio.
Bad Apple was an illustrated work commissioned by ‘The Independent’ newspaper. The illustration accompanied an opinion piece which discussed the way violent killers may be influenced by those around them.

Work entered and selected was chosen from a range of work produced with a diversity of methodological approaches which are part of a research strand around contextualised illustration.

A selection criterion for this peer reviewed competition was the appropriateness of the work in a given context. In this case the context includes the readership, the newsapaper’s market brand, the tone of the piece and the subject matter on which it commented.
The ‘Happy Radio’ image accompanied a lighter piece reflecting on the fact that, even when listening to radio alone, joy can be derived from the shared experience.
The ‘Bad Apple’ piece explored opinions around the influence of people in social contact with an individual who becomes a killer.

As such it’s the role and the response of the illustrator, when presented with very diverse issues, that is being explored and expressed through a conceptual and visual outcome.
