Abstract

Nayra mara is based upon the reversal of spatial metaphor for time, placing the past in front of the performer and the future behind. This concept was developed from the Aymara people of South America, for whom this reversal of time-space relationship is part of their culture, both in language and in gesture. Nayra mara is their term for the past year, but literally translates to front year.

A solo performance version of this piece, Nayra mara (solo), was shown at Prism Sheffield, on February 18, 2011 at the Orchard Centre, Sheffield UK and performed by Kate Sicchio. It did not use the moveable screens but instead projected the video onto a wall behind the performer. The performance space was not a traditional black box performance space, but a small room where audience members stood around the performance space.

The duet version of Nayra mara was performed at Queen Mary University London, on April 23, 2011 by Kate Sicchio and Naomi Allen. This did include the two screens and was witin the Pinter Studio, a small black box theatre.
