Abstract

The workshop will investigate how the challenges around instilling a mindset for Lifelong Learning can be tackled through a focus on skills development. Three innovative educators will briefly present their approach to championing skills development at various stages of the student journey in context of Lifelong Learning:
• transition into higher education through the lessons learned from foundation year cohorts,
• earn as you learn through the lens of a transformative apprenticeship model,
• strides made in graduate employability through a focus on skills development.
During the interactive part of the workshop, participants share experiences and practice in context of the skills development they deem vital for success in their contexts, with co-creation of skills maps for various stages of education, and consideration of learners from a diverse range of backgrounds and starting points, each with their own ambitions. The interaction is facilitated and will also address the challenges encountered whilst embedding skill development across different programmes and how to encourage staff and student buy-in. This includes the variety of tools available to impact and engage learners and enhance access and participation. As an outcome, participants will arrive at approaches to equip learners with the tools and confidence to embrace and adapt their life-long educational journey and enable a 21st century cohort to thrive as the learning and work environment, society and technologies advance.
