Abstract

The book pursues three themes: the character of the industry and its various sectors are introduced; the motivation to tour is examined in a context of culture, behaviour and society; and selected issues in marketing are explained and discussed. The book concludes by considering the future for tourism from a perspective of social and economic change. Questions addressed include the following: Do people need a holiday? How does fashion and cultural change affect tourist choice? What is the role of taste in finding a destination attractive? How do lifestage, lifestyle and disposition influence holiday decisions? The book makes use of material and examples from other fields, and is flavoured with illustrations from popular culture, the arts and literature.
