Abstract
Generally, energy optimization is done to decrease the amount of energy used in existing buildings through energy retrofitting. However, in the developing world, occupants use several energy sources (especially for heating) which is not usually reflected in the optimization. In this research, the optimization was performed for an apartment in Hebron- Palestine, based on the exact amount of energy used currently by households and which they can afford. It was done to check the potential of increasing the level of comfort without increasing the energy cost for the household. This can be described as the enhanced comfort scenario. The main goal of this scenario can be defined as improving the performance of the building without increasing energy consumption during winter. In this scenario, the effect of the optimization is assessed based on the change in the indoor environment using the temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH), and the change in the comfort level using the variation in the percentage of people dissatisfied (PPD). Single retrofitting strategies were used and assessed, and then a combination of the retrofitting strategies were used. The results showed that there was an increase in the internal temperature during winter reaching comfortable levels with delta PPD equal 76.8%.
Goal and scope
The main goal of this paper is to estimate the energy savings through retrofitting of the building envelope using a calibrated model of an apartment in the city of Hebron, West Bank, Palestine during the heating season.
