Abstract
Argues that the principal influences on Adam Smith stem from the same source, namely, Francis Hutcheson. This is true both of the religious and Stoic influences on Smith and also (indirectly) of the influence on him of David
Hume. Concludes that it is unwise to ignore the role of Design and the benevolent Deity in Smith’s system, or to neglect his recognition of the social rather than
individualistic nature of humankind.
