Abstract
Schools and universities are different organisations and tend to work quite differently; in working effectively with teachers and their students, it can be helpful to explore these similarities and differences and be aware of how school improvement and CPD is organised at primary and secondary levels. In this talk, we consider outreach for teachers and their students and share some successes, highlighting the common features and themes that may be usefully applied elsewhere in the country and across different contexts and settings. Working collaboratively, both within and across institutions, may bring challenges but more importantly allows us to maximise the impact of outreach activities whilst simultaneously reducing the duplication of effort. Some reflection on these aims is provided. Also reflected upon is the wider responsibility of a civic university to impact positively on (and exchange knowledge with) our local community. It is becoming increasingly clear that meaningful outreach is not only enjoyable and of benefit to all involved, but can also contribute to the broader institutional missions of places of higher education.
