Abstract

Technological innovations have been intrinsically linked to the evolution and development of documentary over the years; this paper discusses the historical context of these developments and explores the potential that smart devices, the web and social media may offer for the democratization of documentary in the 21st century. The author is developing an interactive documentary project exploring the collaborative opportunities that smart devices and participation culture offer for democratization; the project is currently at the proof of concept stage and is discussed as a work in progress.
