Abstract

Translated Texts for Historians (TTH) is a mainstay of late antique and early medieval scholarship, offering a wide range of translations of Greek and Latin texts from the fourth through eighth centuries. This translation of the works of Jonas of Bobbio, an early seventh-century monk, abbot, and missionary, was intended to be one of its earliest volumes. As its translators point out, its unexpectedly long genesis has allowed it to benefit from developments in scholarship on hagiography, monastic archaeology, and the Irish saint and monastic founder Columbanus, that occurred between the early 1980s and 2017. This volume collects Jonas's three biographies of saints: the Life of Columbanus, Life of John of Réomé, and Life of Vedast. Although there have been some earlier attempts to translate these texts in part, this represents the first full English translation of Jonas's work.
