Abstract

Work has a central role in most people’s lives, offering rewards beyond that of income. Yet, when compared with other conditions, only a small minority of autistic people have paid jobs and an even smaller number work full-time. This is particularly concerning as most would like to work, while about 50% of the autistic community also has average to high intelligence without any additional physical needs. The aim of this chapter is to showcase three initiatives, which utilize a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to support people with autism spectrum conditions within the context of employment, and to provide a framework through these examples on how this approach could be used to design and evaluate employment-focused interventions. In addition, the use of CBPR provides a unique and greatly valuable opportunity (1) to learn more about the everyday challenges of autistic jobseekers, employees, and employers; and (2) to actively involve the community in offering effective, evidence-based advice and Human Resource Management solutions to all stakeholders.
