While British postmodern fiction is distinguished (like all postmodern fiction) by self-conscious fictionality – the continual advertisement of its status as constructed, narrated, or mediated – it remains, at the same time, characterized by its retention of a referential function which allows it to examine issues ‘in the world’. Postmodern British fiction is always already political and keen to engage in debates surrounding identity, race, gender, nationality. The commitment to referentiality, in other words, and the fact that it is not quite as radically innovative as United States or French fiction of the time, does not mean that British postmodernism lacks engagement with ethics, politics, and the materiality of history. This is something I shall argue in my Introduction, explaining how early postmodernism in Britain explores the schism in British culture in the post-war decades between traditional, establishment forms and modern, pop-cultural, consumerist practices; how, in the 1980s, postmodern techniques were an appropriate form for the political critique of Thatcherism; and then, throughout the 1980s and 1990s, were a way of responding to and promoting multiculturalism.
