Abstract
Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy rests on an exploration of radical forms of otherness. Through an examination of trans-species communities in the trilogy, the article will argue that literature possesses a unique capacity to envision different worlds and imagines new ways of co-existing with one another. In discussing these works, this study will therefore attempt to identify a trend in contemporary fiction to engage with the cosmopolitan.
