Abstract

The characteristics of synchrotron radiation and solid-state detectors are briefly introduced, together with the imaging requirements of differing experimental applications. the specification parameters for solic-state detectors are discussed, in particular the importance of detector quantum efficiency, dynamic range and spatial resolution. Two case studies concerned with direct-detection methods are presented. the first details a dispersive EXAFS workstation employing a linear photodiode array, optimised for maximum dynamic range. the second discusses the application of charge-coupled area imagers of Laue diffraction patterns.
