Introduction: Bingocize® (BGZ) is a physical activity-based health promotion intervention that has shown cognitive improvements for community dwelling older adults in the United States of America. The study aim was to assess Executive Function (EF) in older adults residing in the East of England, after playing a digital version of BGZ on an electronic tablet device.

Methods: A BGZ intervention group (n=11, mean age: 73.5 ± 6.4 years), and a non-intervention control group (n=11, mean age: 66 ± 4.8 years) were tested before and after a 10-week period on the following battery of EF assessments: Flanker, Set Shifting, Dot Counting (two scoring systems), Go-No-Go, 1-Back and Anti-Saccades.

Results: A mixed model (2 x 2) Analysis of Variance did not reveal any significant interactions between group x time (all p>0.05). The BGZ group improved on the Flanker (0-10), 8.1 (±0.9) to 8.5 (±0.6); the Set Shifting (0-10), 7.5 (±1.4) to 7.7 (±1.2); the Go-No-Go (0-100), 97.9 (±2.0) to 99.5 (±0.8); and, the 1-Back (0-5), 1.9 (±0.6) to 2.6 (±0.8) (all p<0.05). The control group did show an improvement in the Go-No-Go, 97.8 (±1.8) to 99.1 (±1.8) task but all other EF assessments remained similar over time.

Conclusion: Participation in BGZ led to small but significant cognitive improvements in older adults. Without differential improvement compared to a counterfactual reference group however, our findings remain inconclusive. Importantly, BGZ did not illustrate any cognitive regression or decline on the battery of EF assessments used in this study.
