Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic constitutes an unprecedented challenge globally. However, the contexts, issues and consequences differ among nations and regions. In developing countries like Nigeria, there is a lack of coordinated and comprehensive strategy to deal with economic consequences, food need, health emergency needs, support for livelihoods and safety nets to prepare the ground for economic recovery. In the wake of global responses to the pandemic, the Nigerian government followed global practices by imposing lockdown and containment measures – stay at home order. However, many have argued that the westernised approach does not provide remedial in an environment of low-income and developing countries like Nigeria where extreme poverty is highest, and most of the population depend on the informal economy based on daily wages.
