Abstract

Discourse on Africa as a new frontier of economic opportunities and, recent trends in foreign
investment and trade relations in Africa has led to a growing interest to analyze management
strategies implemented in the continent. This is with the intent that such understanding would offer
directions towards successful business relations and operations in Africa. With a paucity of
comprehensive analysis on theoretical frameworks to understand management systems in Africa,
this development paper aims to provide further knowledge and implications on proposed
theoretical frameworks to analyze African management systems. Focusing on hybrid management
systems as an identified practice amongst some organizations in Africa, the paper presents
analysis, approaches and implications of postcolonial and institutional theories on hybrid
management systems. It indicates other theoretical frameworks proposed and concludes with
requests for further development in this topical research area.
