Approaching Affective Zero (AAZ) was a eighteen-month programme of events in Lincoln promoting a wide range of creative disciplines and collaborations. It reflects the collective spirit of General Practice through discussion and collaboration and was hosted by Mansions of the Future. Its aim was to foster feedback and debate through the testing and experimentation of new ideas for art practice. AAZ was divided into an alternating schedule of private discourse sessions and public events, occurring on the first Thursday of each month. The discourse session enabled a space where artists could meet to share and develop ideas for new pieces of work in a critical and supportive environment. Often ideas and collaborations were spawned in this session. This was followed in the next month by a public presentation in an environment where audience and artists were able to freely discuss the artworks. There was no limit of the form for these sessions and included film screenings, experimental exhibitions models, live sound performances, workshops, discussions, etc. Sometimes feedback and ideas generated in this session fed through to new ideas and artists being involved in future AAZ sessions. December 2019 saw the last AAZ session and the format has evolved to focus on a monthly ‘blind crit’ format between 12 artists for 2020.
