Abstract
This body of research explores the possibilities of seeing music as a dramaturgical device. It does this specifically through engaging with three of Ravel’s works, and situates these in the context of their composition around the time of WWI. Owing to this context and the context of their subsequent performance histories, parallel research enquiries into post-conflict performance, and performance as commemoration, form core enquiries within the body of the work.
