Abstract
Chapter objectives
• To consider the benefits of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as an experimental method, alongside their shortcomings in health research
• To particularly highlight situations where it is not appropriate to use RCTs for methodological, practical or ethical reasons
• To outline a range of the techniques labelled as non-randomized experimental methods that provide a scientific alternative to RCTs
• To consider the strengths and weaknesses of such experimental methods in researching health.
