Abstract
Written from the vantage point of the South East African coast, this article examines its places in the Indian Ocean imaginary; the ways in which the sea has shaped land-based activity, culture and thought, and the experiences of those who have gone to sea. It examines the impact of ocean-going technology and settlement patterns, and discusses the fragmentary evidence of slavery in what became Port Natal.
