Abstract
Monumental Language In this work I am preoccupied by language — particularly in the play between content and the physical form of texts and how this might affect our understanding of them. In this work the ephemeral and sensational nature of digital news content becomes offset with notions of longevity, order and power associated with inscriptions from the classical period. I am essentially using a process of de-familiarization and convergence to create new combinations of language, form and place. Displayed as part of the Lincoln Frequency Festival, this work combines ‘short life’ digital content (news feeds) with the ancient and permanent form of stone inscription. My point of departure is in framing an apparent collision between sensational news content and the ephemeral nature of the medium.
