Whilst EBP is generally accepted as something to aspire to, in reality changes to practices are not easily made. Although nurses report that they are confident of their clinical expertise, it has been shown that frequently practice is not based on best evidence. Grol and Grimshaw (2003) found that between 30 and 40 per cent of patients do not receive care based on sound evidence. The transferring of evidence into practice is often a daunting, difficult and complex activity. Simply informing people of the latest research findings does not automatically result in new approaches being adopted and it cannot be assumed that developments in knowledge and skills will result in changes to practice. For instance, most people know that hand washing is central to reducing infections and yet large numbers of health professionals fail to do this appropriately (see, for example, Haas and Larson, 2008). Changing care delivery and individuals’ behaviours and approaches takes time and effort. It is important to be thoroughly prepared before trying to instigate changes. There is no single best way of introducing new evidence into practice; as the type of change required will often dictate the approach to be used. The intention of this chapter is to give an overview of the issues which need to be considered and the tools that may be of use.
