Abstract
The common theme of both this paper is a critical scepticism of a number of assumptions underlying the interpretation the medieval landscape. It is argued here that while they are not necessarily incorrect, it must be recognized that the evidential basis on which they are based is often insubstantial. Too often, assumption has been added to assumption and, neither the foundations of the interpretation, nor the implications have been re-examined. Transhumance was undoubtedly an important factor in the formation of the English landscape but, by failing to understanding the changing character of the practice over time, it has not been possible to appreciate the nature of its contribution.
