Abstract
It is likely that Lincolnshire mud and stud (M&S) represents the least known and least appreciated element of English construction heritage. However, 30 years ago a grass root network called East Midlands Earth Structure Society (EMESS) rediscovered this technique and started to transform public opinion. The legacy of this campaign is based on two narratives, historical and environmental. Interestingly, these narratives are often underpinned by conflicting values. This paper presents strategies that could be developed in parallel and may simultaneously support each narrative.
