Abstract
This article provides some thoughts on the routes to becoming a school head in Cote d'Ivoire and England. Brief descriptions of the two educational systems are provided and a small scale study is undertaken through interviews. The results point to sharp differences in the two countries in terms of transparency in the appointment frameworks, thus influencing school effectiveness.
