Abstract

This chapter explores the use of recruitment songs during the First World War with a particular focus on The Daily Mail's commissioned composition 'Your King and Country Want You'. The chapter analyses the song itself, its performance in Music Halls and how it contributed to Kitchener's recruitment strategy, as well as interrogating how the song has been used in later cinematic and theatrical texts.
