Abstract

This article examines the connected Pendennis novels (Pendennis, The Newcomes, and The Adventures of Philip) as an extended, tripartite Bildungsroman or novel of development. The article assesses both the narratives themselves, and the advertisements that accompanied them, through a consideration of their publication in serial instalments.
