Abstract

Surveying the history of staging the ghost on the English stage from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel, The Woman in Black, this chapter explores how the theatrical medium of these ghost stories, even as it poses a challenge to the aesthetic integrity of the ghost story through the potentially embarrassing need to furnish the ghost with a material and spatial form, has, on the modern stage, become central to its power.
