Abstract

North Nottingham can be defined by four separate areas, each reflecting their principal moment of development. To the north, Aspley, Broxtowe and Cinderhill are together the city’s largest conurbation of interwar garden city council housing. Neighbouring this to the north-west are Bilborough, Beechdale and Strelley, which are far more ‘new town’ than garden city, with prefabricated houses and modernist churches. In the east, Bestwood is perhaps is the best example of a colliery company village, with a mix of council housing from both the interwar and postwar periods. At the very centre is Basford and Bulwell, a heavily built up valley of the industrial revolution, marked by framework knitters, methodism, Luddites, Byron and D.H. Lawrence.
