Abstract

When we started working as a group in 2006, we wanted to replicate the
methods of those who inspired us: the Yes Men and the net.art movement
(mostly Eva and Franco Mattes, Vuk Cosik and Ubermorgen), as
well as the culture jamming work featured in the magazine Adbusters.
The net.art movement was the reason for our initial interest in concepts
such as authorship, fakes, and originality as they were emerging within
digital culture. We were particularly fascinated by how these topics were
somehow permeated by a political layer: the freedom to copy, modify,
and circulate images and texts seemed to involve an antiauthoritarian
impulse. We were drawn to the practice of reappropriating existing
images and ideas and reversing their intended meanings. Our culture
jams test the limits of what the public buys as “real” and what is detected
as fake.
