Abstract
This is a contextual essay written for the exhibition catalogue (detail) by Andrew Bracey to accompany the exhibition of the same name. The essay explores the importance of looking hard and paying attention, through the example of encountering a familiar painting, Las Meninas by Velasquez, for the first time at the Prado museum.
