In the 2014/15 season, the municipal theatre in Bremen, Germany, put on a total of fifty-two events relating
to refugees and migration, under the heading of In Transit. Activities ranged from full productions of plays
to discussions with the audience, and events for specific refugee groups. The majority of these events, most
planned well in advance, came ahead of the massive wave of migration to Germany in summer 2015, and
without this initiative some parts of the population of Bremen might not have been as aware of the issues
relating to migration and refugees, and thus arguably not as prepared for the big wave of migrants. For the
2015/16 season, equally planned well in advance of the then unpredicable summer 2015 wave of migrants,
the theatre wanted to focus on the telling of a story of the vehemence, weight and impact of an ancient
Greek play with its selection of Wajdi Mouawad’s Verbrennungen (Incendies) as a new production,
complemented by a series of talks about the countries of origin of the migrants. In the article, Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe and Yana Meerzon discuss how the theatre in Bremen addresses issues of migration and refugees specifically in its production of Verbrennungen and in the wider context of its 2014/15 season.
