Abstract

‘In that solitude’ is a composition for violin and piano, consisting of four short movements that engage in a creative way with the notion of the musical fragment as part of a larger research project investigating this subject. In this work, these ideas are explored through the use of certain compositional approaches, sonorities and structures. ‘In that solitude’ forms one piece in a series of three fragmented, intimate chamber works, alongside ‘Be silent’ for solo piano and ‘Be Still’ for marimba and harp.

Additional Information:This performance was given as part of the awards event of the 2015 Creative Responses to Modernism Prize at King's College, London. 'In that solitude' was awarded first prize. Eminent composer and one of the judges, Michael Berkeley, noted the following about the composition: ‘In That Solitude reveals a fine ear for sound. The very opening chords on the piano are arresting and the string writing is exploratory and questing. There is too a satisfying and organic sense of purpose in the interplay between the two instruments. One does not feel that the contemporary language is there simply for the sake of sounding modern but rather that this is a natural aural landscape inhabited and rejoiced in by the composer. There is, in other words, a satisfying sense of integrity behind the composition and a consistent mood.’ These comments were later published in the introduction to Textual Practice, 2016, 30/1.
