Abstract
A paper examining the International Law Association (ILA) Committee on International Law on Sustainable Development between 2003 and 2012. In that capacity, I supported the Committee in its analysis of the normative implications of sustainable development, which built on the work of the previous Committee on Legal Aspects of Sustainable Development. And as our Committee moved towards its principal output – namely the 2012 Sofia Guiding Statements on the Judicial Elaboration of Sustainable Development – it was a great honour to work with some of the most eminent scholars in the field to develop, and refine, the document. So why focus on judicial elaboration? Why narrow down the rich discussion on the intergovernmental, institutional and political-legal interface that has always made studying sustainable development so intriguing for so many international lawyers?
