Abstract

This paper explores the creation and construction of early modern royal archives in the European context. The chapter focuses in particular in the first archival chambers of the imperial archive in the Simancas fortress. The royal archive in Simancas was created by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and substantially expanded by Philip II of Spain in the 16th century. The comparative study of the architecture of archives in Europe resulted in the identification of a vernacular tradition in the construction of archives.
