Abstract
Informal settlements produced by the users themselves provide valuable lessons for the design of low cost housing in developing countries. This paper discusses their social and spatial effectiveness by analysing an example, the Crossroads settlement near Cape Town. This is carried out using the “space syntax” technique in combination with the social theoretic concept of “structuration”, and the results show how spatial forms are integrated with social structures and idea systems.
