Abstract

Some psychological concepts describe architectural production in the context of designers’ motivation. This way of describing architecture could give an insight into problems of urban redevelopment and also the poor quality of design which does not reflect the needs of modern cities. Interestingly, however, ‘Architectural Narcissism’ with its inward orientated buildings is as inadequate response to context in a similar way as historicism. Both these are extreme approaches which fail to respond to the surroundings. Psychological analyses of those approaches could give an indication of what is wrong with modern architecture and how it could be improved.
