Abstract

The Community Attitudes Towards Sex Offenders (CATSO) scale purports to measure respondents' attitudes towards sexual offenders. However, previous studies question its factor structure. To address this, we sought to ‘reimagine’ the CATSO as an outcome measure of perceptions, as opposed to an attitudinal measure. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in a three factor 20-item scale being developed. This paper outlines the development of this scale, and suggests how it may be best used in future research.
