This chapter uses as a case study the Italian anarchist colony in London between 1870 and 1917 and highlights the relevance and benefits that a local analysis within a transnational context can bring to an understanding of the dynamics of the anarchist diaspora. Focusing on a single location makes it possible to engage with the social fields of transnationality. The analysis of political and social aspects of the anarchist exile makes it possible to follow in detail a number of features : newspapers and language use, production of a counterculture, relations with economic migrants, and collaboration with other national anarchist groups. It also highlights the continuing relevance of the motherland as a political beacon for the anarchist exiles. Moreover, focusing on a single nodal city can lead to useful comparisons to understand the transnational libertarian movement. At the same time, the chapter argues that the same “local” research findings emphasize the complementarity and significance of other approaches, including a return to the national paradigm.
