Rhenium (Re) is an important rare earth metal, used in super alloys due to its desirable mechanical properties, which is of particular importance in the aerospace industry. The increasing demand for rhenium in the commercial sector and scarcity of this rare earth metal determines a requirement for the recovery and recycling of rhenium bearing scrap metal.
The extraction and purification of rhenium from the Rolls-Royce™ nickel based superalloy CMSX-4 was investigated utilising a fractional distillation process to produce pure ammonium perrhenate, removing contaminants produced though the process. Complimentary analytical techniques were researched; these being Raman spectroscopy, fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, to provide new analytical methods for the identification of ammonium perrhenate and process contamination at an atomic and molecular level.
It has been determined that this unique distillation process can isolate rhenium and consequently 100% pure ammonium perrhenate can be produced when specific parameters are adhered to, eliminating and reducing process contamination. Standard analytical methods, these being atomic absorption spectroscopy and ion chromatography permitted the investigation of other complimentary techniques. Therefore it was ascertained that Raman spectroscopy is a rapid technique that can provide information on process contamination, additionally it was deduced that fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy can provide essential data on ammonium perrhenate, contamination and concentrations.
