Abstract

Plowman was invited by the curator, Deborah Dean, to take part in this group exhibition. The focus was on artists whose work utilises repetitive processes and/or pre-determined rules. Plowman exhibited a work entitled ‘I may appear to be free, but I am just a prisoner’. This comprised a series of drawings of box-like structures rendered in blue, red and black ink across the width and along the length a 10 metre roll of paper. Plowman was also commissioned to produce a new work for the foyer area of the gallery, entitled ‘This is as silent as the city gets’. This commission consisted of 10 rolls of tracing paper unrolled vertically and contained within a constructed box the sides of which echoed the floor plan of the foyer area. Along the length of each roll of tracing paper was a felt tip drawing of a representation of the unfurled roll. The exhibition was reviewed by John Cornall in an magazine, July 2002. The exhibition subsequently toured to the Pump House Galery London from 19.3.03 - 11.05.03. At this venue Plowman also included another work entitled ‘The only real insanity is the insanity you choose no3’. This work was originally shown in a solo exhibition at medievalmodern, London from 15.11.02 – 21.12.02. This work consisted of 25 A5 size drawings mounted on foamboard, each drawing composed of parallel lines of repetitive shapes was rendered in ink and mimicked the format of text in a medieval manuscript. Both in its making, a laborious and repetitive process through to the use of a gold leaf. Exhibited alongside the drawings was a medieval manuscript. Both exhibition were accompanied by a catalogue with essays by Deborah Dean and David Lillington, Angel Row Gallery, ISBN 0905634551.
